چکیده

We examine the stability of ring-like configurations of N charges on a plane interacting through the potential V (z 1 ,. .. , z N) = |z i | 2 − i<j ln |z i − z j | 2. We interpret the equilibrium distributions in terms of a shell model and compare predictions of the model with the results of numerical simulations for systems with up to 100 particles. Determining the distributions of charged particles in a central potential is a classic problem which has been studied since the nature of the electric force was first understood [1]. In two dimensions the Coulomb potential varies logarithmically with distance and describes, for example, the interaction of

1 4 Ja n 20 02 Charge Fluctuations in Finite Coulomb Systems

When described in a grand canonical ensemble, a finite Coulomb system exhibits charge fluctuations. These fluctuations are studied in the case of a classical (i.e. non-quantum) system with no macroscopic average charge. Assuming the validity of macroscopic electrostatics gives, on a three-dimensional finite large conductor of volume V , a mean square charge < Q 2 > which goes as V 1/3. More gen...

Universal description of channel conductivity for nanotube and nanowire transistors

A theory of drift-diffusion transport in a low-dimensional field-effect transistor is developed. Two cases of a semiconductor nanowire and a single-wall nanotube are considered using self-consistent electrostatics to obtain a general expression for the transconductance. This quantum-wire channel device description is shown to differ from a classical device theory because of the specific nanowir...

Numerical Analysis of Nanotube-Based NEMS Devices—Part I: Electrostatic Charge Distribution on Multiwalled Nanotubes

The charge distribution on the surface of a biased conductive, finite-length, cylindrical nanotube, free standing above an infinite grounded plane, is investigated. The diameter range of the cylinder tube under study is 20–60 nm, which is much larger than the screening length, meaning the quantum and statistical effects on the charge distribution are negligible. The relationship between the cha...

Quantum dot defined in a two-dimensional electron gas at a n-AlGaAs ÕGaAs heterojunction: Simulation of electrostatic potential and charging properties

We present a self-consistent Schrödinger–Poisson scheme for simulation of electrostatic quantum dots defined in gated two-dimensional electron gas formed at n-AlGaAs /GaAs heterojunction. The computational method is applied to a quantitative description of transport properties studied experimentally by Elzermann et al. Appl. Phys. Lett. 84, 4617 2004 . Our three-dimensional model describes the ...

Alternative separation of Laplace’s equation in toroidal coordinates and its application to electrostatics

The usual method of separation of variables to find a basis of solutions of Laplace’s equation in toroidal coordinates is particularly appropriate for axially symmetric applications; for example, to find the potential outside a charged conducting torus. An alternative procedure is presented here that is more appropriate where the boundary conditions are independent of the spherical coordinate y...
